WHO ARE ZUUL FX AS BAND MEMBERS?
Well, hello everybody. I am Shag from ZUUL FX and i represent today my band. Our second album called "Live Free Or Die" was out in March 2007 and for now, evrrything seems to be allright for us. The first album "By The Cross" has been well received by the audiance and the medias, and it seems this new one follows the same story and more I guess, so we are very happy.
Steeve aka "Zuul" is the singer of the band, Karim the guitar player, Aurel the drummer and me, Shag the bass player.
WHEN DID YOU HAVE FOUNDED THE BAND?
WOULD YOU LIKE TO TALK ABOUT THE VERY FIRST BEGINNING OF BAND...
Steeve was singing in the band No Return before. He decided to quit the band because he wanted to do an other kind of metal, more melodic and he wanted to "sing" more, instead of "scream" most of the time. So this is the very beginning. He met Blast, our last guitar player and they founded the band together. They began to work together and Aurel the drummer came very fast in the band. They made a demo at the end of 2003 "Ass Music" and they had a lot of reviews from medias and people... They decided to write an album and I came at this moment in the band for taking care of the bass lines. The first album was ready in August 2004 and we did a lot of shows to improve it. Then we had the deal with Equilibre Music and the album came out on March 2005.
WHAT'S ABOUT YOUR PREVIOUS RECORDING-EFFORTS?
As I said, this first album "By The Cross" has been written and recorded very quickly but we played the songs of it during 7 monthes before it was out. So when the album was available for the public, we were very ready to defend it on the road. We had a lot of success at this time because we were considered as a "new band" and when people were seeing us on stage, they couldn't believe their eyes! hahaha...
We still are very proud of this new album. it brought to us the position we have now in the metal scene, in France and across Europe.
WHAT'S ABOUT YOUR FOLLOWING?
Well, there were 2 years between the first album and this new one... So maybe we're gonna try to make the following album before March 2009, ha ha ha... But we're gonna see.
THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTS IN YOUR HISTORY?
I guess there is the coming out of the first album, because as I said, we practiced the songs on stage and we had a lot of success although people doesn't know us at all!
And there is the moment we played with Fear Factory in paris, opening for them. It was the first gig of our new guitar player Karim, and it was just so great. We knew at this moment that we were the 4 right guys for the job! ha ha ha... Just after that we came in studio to record "Live Free Or Die".
And, maybe an other time, we were opening for Ill Nino in Strasbourg and we realized that most of the people were coming to see us and not Ill Nino... Ha ha ha... People from Germany, Luxembourg, Belgium... It was very nice to live that and the show was great!!!
ANY INTRODUCTIVE WORDS TO "LIVE FREE OR DIE"?
People who loved ZUUL FX with the first album "By The Cross" are going to love this one. We have the same energy as before and maybe more!We wrote some cool new songs all together in the band and we are really proud of our metal music. You can have with "Live Free Or Die" a very nice metal album, which doesn't sound like any other bands at the moment. You may have the pure ZUUL FX style in your hands! ha ha ha
THE SOUND SEEMS TO BE MORE INDUS THAN BEFORE...
Well, it's funny but it is exactly the contrary. In the first album all the sounds (guitars, basses, drums) were coming out in an electronic way, I mean, no amplify, directly in the mix table. And it gives this industrial sound you can hear on "By The Cross".
For "Live Free Or Die", we use our stage technology and we tried to get the same sound as we have in a concert, very live, more natural. The drums for example, are totally different and really less indus than on the first one...
THERE'S SUCH INDEEP AGRESSION, RIGHT?
There will be always indeep agression in our music because we love to play it like that. It doesn't mean we are agressive in our lives. For example, we are not listenning to the same kind of music all the time. ZUUL FX is certainly one of the most eclectic band in its influences! ha ha ha... From Black Sabbath to Pantera, via Phil Collins, Earth Wind And Fire, Toto, U2 and The Cure ! But when we are together, we like to play fats and heavy music, very agressive.
We found the tracks of "By The Cross" too slow when we were writting the songs for "Live Free Or Die", that's why it's faster! hahaha
THE BEST ISSUES OF YOUR SOUND?
If I understand well your question, I should say we are proud to produce on stage the same kind of emotion you can have musically with the album. If you come to see us, you will listen to all the things which are making our sound. No bullshits!!!
ANY PARTICULAR CONCEPT CONCERNING THE ALBUM?
WHAT'S THE MOOD OF IT?
Yes and No... There's no concept because we are not preachers, but ok, maybe the concept could be a general one. Be honest and trustfull and you are a good personn! We don't care about the others! People who are men or stupid are not interessant for us. Live Free Or Die means "follow your way like you want", but it also means : "don't bother other people with your freedom", ha h aha... If you are not able to live free and to be nice... then die! hahaha
THE MOST SALIENT ASPECTS OF YOUR NEW ALBUM?
I could say that it is the diversity of the songs. You have fast ones, very agressives, very "ZUUL FX's style", but you can also find some new materials like "Honey" a very slow song, "14 years old", which a song very "catchy and pop", and also "French Kisses" which is a song very dark and melodic.
And of course, listen to our drummer... he's amazing, I'm not joking!
WHAT'S ABOUT THE FEEDBACK?
It is already very nice. We are in al the medias in France, the reviews are very good and all the live reviews are great, it seems that the ZUUL FX Machine is back!!! hahaha
WHAT DO YOU WANT TO COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR SOUND?
The most important thing for us is when people after a show tell us that they spent a fucking good time!!! We want to communicate that: enthousiasm and happiness. We like to hang out with this kind of people.
We are on tour at the moment, in France. We are planning the european one for the next month, I guess in September. We are going to do some festivals this summer. These are the future plans for us.
YOUR LIFE'S PHILOSOPHY?
Well, I guess the philosophy of life that we have is simple and resume in the title of the album... "Live Free Or Die", which means that we only have one life so we have to live it the best way wa can do... To be free to do whatever you want is the best thing ever, you have to fight for that if you don't have it. It's good for everybody...
THE FUTURE OF THE BAND?
The future is quite simple too. We have of course the shows and this summer we are going to shoot another video on a track for the new album. We also want maybe to shoot a live performance for a DVD later. I guess we are going to work on new songs right after summer too.
ANY LAST REMARKS?
Well, I would like to thank all the audience we have in Italy, all the people who support us. We didn't come yet in Italy but for the upcoming european tour, we wish it could be possible. A very special thank to everybody we know there, sepcially in Cosenza...
And of course, thanks to you for this interview.
