PRESENT YOURSELVES OUR READERS...
“Engwar: We are Vehementer Nos, French band performing progressive black metal and we just released on first album on Osmose productions on February 2007.”
WHO ARE VEHEMENTER NOS AS BAND MEMBERS?
“Vehementer Nos is just A.M. (drums) and I (vocals, guitar, bass). All the other musicians are session members and on this album we have 4 of them playing the cello, the flute, the violin and the double bass.”
WHEN DID YOU HAVE FOUNDED THE BAND?
“We created the band in 2000.”
WOULD YOU LIKE TO TALK ABOUT THE VERY FIRST BEGINNING OF BAND...
“Well basically we started to work on a few ideas I had at that time and a couple of years later we had some complete songs, that’s why in 2002 we recorded a test demo, to try to take an objective view at what we had. The demo was satisfying but not enough to make an album so we got back to work to finally record the album in 2005.”
WHAT'S ABOUT YOUR FOLLOWING?
“There will be another Vehementer Nos album but not in 2007. We like to take our time to write songs so I think it might take us a couple of years to have the second album complete.”
THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTS IN YOUR HISTORY?
“Well probably the record deal we got with Osmose. It’s a mythical label and when we finished the album we thought it would be the perfect label for us and to our great luck they loved the album and we ended up signing with them only a couple of weeks after we finished the album !!!”
ANY INTRODUCTIVE WORDS TO YOUR DEBUT ALBUM?
“I think as a foreword, it would be interesting for your readers to know that this album took us more than 5 years to see the light of day. Everything you hear was carefully crafted in order to satisfy us. We’re proud of this album and we hope some of you will appreciate what we have to offer. Vehementer Nos performs a rather poetical and dark type of black metal and I think you might find it interesting if you like these styles.”
THE SOUND IS A SORT OF ORCHESTRAL DEATH/BLACK METAL, DO YOU AGREE??
“Yes that’s it basically. We wanted to mix black metal with a lot of classical elements and with some progressive influences so I guess the result is a combination of these styles.”
WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE MAIN ISSUES OF YOUR SOUND?
“We definitely have some violent and fast parts with blast-beats and double bass-drum but we also like calmer moments that’s why you can find some almost dark folk moments on the record. As you said earlier, we use classical instrument to give a wider dimension to some parts of the album.”
WHAT'S ABOUT THE PRODUCTION OF ALBUM?
“I recorded the album myself on my own material between july 2005 and june 2006. Then we went to a professional studio for the mastering. I’m pleased with the final result specially compared with the little means we had.”
ANY PARTICULAR CONCEPT CONCERNING THE ALBUM?
“Yes the album is a concept album. It’s a reflection based on 2 ideas: the unstoppable wheel of time and the endless thirst for power of men. The central question is: is it possible to leave a mark on the axis of time by trying to gain as much power as possible?”
WHAT'S THE MOOD OF IT?
“Epic, dark, intense, melancholic, powerful, sorrowful, etc…”
THE MOST SALIENT ASPECTS OF YOUR NEW ALBUM?
“Well I would say what makes us a bit different from many black metal bands is the fact that we’ve mixed our three big elements (metal, classical, progressive) in a personal way. We want to take the listener on a journey and we want this journey to be interesting so we spend a lot of time on the songs to be sure they’re not too easy or too complicated. There’s a thin line between the two and it’s very easy to cross it !”
WHAT'S ABOUT THE FEEDBACK?
“It’s been really good so far. We’ve had many journalists telling us the album was great which makes me really happy and confident about its qualities. I’m looking forward to hearing what music lovers in general think of the album but everybody who listened to it found it interesting so far.”
WHAT DO YOU WANT TO COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR SOUND?
“Many different things like pain, sadness, melancholy but also pride, strength, wisdom… Vehementer Nos is a very personal project and we put everything we feel into it that’s why there is this mix of many and sometimes contradictory feelings.”
“There will be no gig for the moment. We don’t want to play with samples and taking a string quartet on the road would be expensive and complicated. Vehementer Nos is a studio project and will remain so for quite some time in my opinion !”
YOUR LIFE'S PHILOSOPHY?
“Writing interesting music, spending time with people we love, not losing time with uninteresting and boring stuffs, trying to appreciate every good thing that happens in general.”
THE FUTURE OF THE BAND?
“We’ve already started to work on a few ideas for the second album but as I said before don’t expect it too soon. Trust me it will be worth the wait though! We’ll take Vehementer Nos sound one step further but to do it properly we need some time.”
