Tales of dark

PRESENT YOURSELVES OUR READERS...

Cheers. This is Kristijan, the guitarist of Tales Of Dark, a Serbian doom metal band.

WHO ARE TALES OF DARK AS BAND MEMBERS?
Tales Of Dark counts seven members.

Arpad Takac - vocal
Jovana Karajanov - vocal
Nikola Cavar - guitar
Kristijan Zavodski - guitar
Ispan Andras - bass
Davor Menzildzic - keyboard
Darko Stojanovic - drums

WHEN DID YOU HAVE FOUNDED THE BAND?
The band started playing in late October 2001. The lineup was very different from the one that functions today, but the three of us (Arpad, Nikola and myself) remained to replace those who left us with the members that are in the band right now, and who helped us to bring Tales Of Dark to a higher level. This is the best lineup since the band started working, and I belive that nothing will change in the near future.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO TALK ABOUT THE VERY FIRST BEGINNING OF BAND...
Well, after several lineup changes the band began playing both covers and our songs, in order to animate potential fans. Two years after forming the band we entered a low-budget studio, and recorded our demo cd bearing the name "U Kori Tame". Even though the production was below our expectations, it was more than well accepted by Serbian fans. It helped us a lot in gaining fans who supported us all across Serbia. In the following 2 years the band played a bunch of gigs, and presented ourselves all around the world using the web. Soon after, we had enough material to enter a real studio and create our first album, "Fragile Monuments".

WHAT'S ABOUT YOUR PREVIOUS RECORDING-EFFORTS?
After our debut cd "U Kori Tame" we decided to do more a serious album as soon as possible. In January 2005 we entered "Dream" studio in a small town near Novi Sad, and after 3 weeks we finished recording of all tracks. In the following months the album was mixed in studio "42" and in the fall of 2005 we started negotiating with record labels. It took some time, but in the summer of 2006 we signed for the Russian doom label Solitude Prod.

WHAT'S ABOUT YOUR FOLLOWING?
Solitude Prod. offered us another contract for year 2007, but we couldn't agree due to the fact that we still don't have all of the songs for a new album. We belive that we're going to enter the studio at the end of this year, so we plan to release a new album in the spring of 2008.

THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTS IN YOUR HISTORY?
Tales Of Dark is one of just a few Serbian metal bands who succeeded in releasing an album for a foreign record label. Tales Of Dark is one of just a few Serbian metal bands who appeared 3 times at EXIT festival's Metal Hammer stage along with Napalm Death, Agnostic Front, Moonspell, Max Cavalera... Also, Tales Of Dark appeared at the famous Serbian Zajecar Guitar Festival where the jury voted us second and the audience third out of 120 demo bands of all genres.

ANY INTRODUCTIVE WORDS TO "FRAGILE MONUMENTS"?
Well, "Fragile Monuments" is a 70 minute long modern doom death metal album containing a bit of goth elements. It constists of 6 songs and the cd contains one videoclip recorded for the song "Of Grandiose Fevers And Passion Arcane". The songs are very varied and full of both atmospheric parts and hard guitar riffs, mixed with clean and growled male vocals and gentle female vocals.

THE SOUND IS DOOM AND GOTHIC...
Yes, we prefer to call it doom/death metal, but there are bit of goth elements and something else I can't describe. It's probably a piece of our personal influence, but I don't think too much about giving a name to our sound. I guess it's the Tales Of Dark sound.

ARE YOU INFLUENCED BY BALKAN MUSIC?
No, not realy. If you're asking me if Balkan ethno influences us, the answer is no. I think none of us in the band like Balkan ethno music. Scandinavian and Anglo Saxon ethno seems much more interesting to us than Balkan.

WHAT'S ABOUT THE PRODUCTION OF ALBUM?
"Fragile Monuments" was produced by our keyboard player, Davor Menzildzic, who also mixed and mastered the album. We are very satesfied with what we have got and what Davor did, especially with the very low budget we had. Of course, there are things we would like to do better on the next album, but since this was our debut cd, we are more than proud to have this kind of production. We're preparing better equipment for our next studio recording and we expect the new material to sound even better than this one.

ANY PARTICULAR CONCEPT CONCERNING THE ALBUM?
The lyrics describe several subjects that are not directly connected with one another, so the album isn't conceptual in this way, but there is a concept that describes the state of mind during: falling down, being down, returning, falling again, being at the bottom and seeing the light at the end of the tunel, eventually. The music supports this concept a lot.

WHAT'S THE MOOD OF IT?
Dissapointment and anger mostly, even with some despair and cold, insensitive wondering. However, the last song encourages with warmness.

THE MOST SALIENT ASPECTS OF YOUR NEW ALBUM?
I don't feel that I, or anyone else in the band should answer this. It would be more interesting for those who hear it to comment about the most salient aspects. I guess I see it as too subjective and personal.

WHAT'S ABOUT THE FEEDBACK?
We are very satesfied with the feedback from all over the planet. Most of the support e-mails we receive are from the USA, but also from South America and Europe. Of course, we are still working on promoting ourselves through magazines, e-zines etc. but we already receive a great number of e-mails with high compliments.

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR SOUND?
We're trying to create the atmosphere that all of us felt unnumbered times before. The atmosphere of being alone, feeling rejected...
That's not easy to do, but we are careful when we choose where to put keyboards and where heavy distorsion guitar riffs. The idea is to generate a perfect combination of words, music, instruments and male and female vocals to achieve the goal.

TOURING PLANS?
At this moment we are planning several gigs in Serbia, including an appearance at this year’s EXIT festival. We would like to tour Europe this or next year, but I cannot plan that much ahead. Also, we have no idea if there is enough interest for our band, but if so, we hope some promoters will contact us.

YOUR LIFE'S PHILOSOPHY?
Life's too damn short! So, try to live it as best you can. Also, be aware of your faults and vanity. Success is to exceed yourself. That's most important.

THE FUTURE OF THE BAND?
We started working on new songs, and the plan is to release a new album next year, and then to tour Europe. We'll see...

ANY LAST REMARKS?
Thank you for your time. Keep up the good work with your magazine, and stay doomed.
