Sulphur
PRESENT YOURSELVES OUR READERS...
Sulphur arose from the ashes of the nineties black metal act Taakeriket. The band was originally formed as a four piece, and with this line-up recorded their first demo; "A Relic for the Damned" in October 2000. This recording earned the band some initial interest, amongst others a support gig for Aeternus and an appearance at Hole in the sky 2001. After this, the band fell on some hard times and little happened for some years. In 2005 Sulphur re-emerged with new material and a fresh and dedicated line-up. At this point the band recorded the demo "Outburst of Desecration". This earned them a deal with Osmose Productions, great reviews as well as new live appearances, amongst others on Hole in the Sky 2005. Eager to continue down the road of success and eternal damnation the band headed back into the studio in March 2006. Again under the supervision of producer Bjørnar E. Nilsen which also produced the Outburst demo. After some intensive weeks the album was finished.
WHO ARE SULPHUR AS BAND MEMBERS?
Øyvind Madsen, Guitars, bass and keyboards. Thomas Skinlo Høyven: Vocals, Eivind Huse:Giutars. Regarding the drums and the bass we have so far used session musicians untill reacently we finally got a permanent drummer and bass player.
WHEN DID YOU HAVE FOUNDED THE BAND?
The answer for this questions have already been answerd in question one. But anyway it was in 1999.
WOULD YOU LIKE TO TALK ABOUT THE VERY FIRST BEGINNING OF BAND...
Same here. Question one is a short story of the band.
WHAT'S ABOUT YOUR PREVIOUS RECORDING-EFFORTS?
Our first demo called “a relic for the Damned” was recorded in october 2000. It was printed in only 100 copies and are not for sale anymore. Outburst of Desecration was released in 2005 in 200 copies. This demo also led to our contract with Osmose Productions. Outburst of Desecration will shortly appear on vinyl released on Osmose.
WHAT'S ABOUT YOUR FOLLOWING?
I guess you mean Cursed Madness on this question...
It was a great and inspiring experience. The drums was done in only 2 days thanks to the fantastic drummer, Mads Gulbekkhei. The guitar, bass and keyboards was done in 2 weeks and vocals in 2 days. And a special thanks to the producer, Bjørnar Nilsen for doing a fantastic job for us.
THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTS IN YOUR HISTORY?
We did play the Hole in the Sky festival in Bergen, Norway in 2001 and 2005. We also was support band for Aeternus in 2001. And of course the signing to Osmose which led to our debut album, Cursed Madness.
ANY INTRODUCTIVE WORDS TO "CURSED MADNESS"?
It’s a dark and brutal mix between death and black metal with progressive undertones. Also I think the album is a bit experimental when it comes to the sound and the use of keyboards. This challange the listener even more. You will need to listen to the album many times to get the hole picture.
WHICH ARE THE MAIN ISSUES OF YOUR SOUND?
Both black and death metal mixed with progressive elements. I listen a lot to 70’s progressive rock bands like Genesis and Jethro Tull which gives me much inspiration. Also black metal from the early ninties like Darthrone and Satyricon.
WHAT'S ABOUT THE PRODUCTION OF ALBUM?
It was produced by Børnar Nilsen and Sulphur in Conclave Media studios in Bergen. We wanted the sound to be at bit rusty and raw, not the very typical well produced sound. We are very happy with the sound of it, it sounds so dark, cold and brutal.
ANY PARTICULAR CONCEPT CONCERNING THE ALBUM?
No. The lyrics for all the songs tell a different story with no connection to each other.
WHAT'S THE MOOD OF IT?
Thats up to the listener to decide.
THE MOST SALIENT ASPECTS OF YOUR NEW ALBUM?
The experimental, progressive approach and the sound of the album.
WHAT'S ABOUT THE FEEDBACK?
It’s been very good actually. We have got many good reviews on different webzines and magazines around the world. So far so good.
TOURING PLANS?
Nothing spesific yet, but we are working on it. We will probably start with a few gigs in Norway and then hit the road down the continent.
YOUR LIFE'S PHILOSOPHY?
Drink lots of beer, create great music and of course play gigs.
THE FUTURE OF THE BAND?
We are planning to make our first music video for the song, Spilt Blod & Brente Knokler. The working progress for the next album have already started so there is lot of things to get done.
