Interview to SILENTIUM
PRESENT YOURSELVES OUR READERS...
"I am Tony, the guitarist of the band SILENTIUM and Sami, the Keyboard player / composer."
WHO ARE SILENTIUM AS BAND MEMBERS?
"We are Riina Rinkinen (fem.voc), Matti Aikio (bass & voc), myself Tony Lahtinen (rhy gtr), Juha Lehtioksa (lead gtr), Sami Boman (keyb) and Jari Ojala (drms)."
WHEN DID YOU HAVE FOUNDED THE BAND?
"Silentium was founded in 1996 after Mattis and Samis former band had came to its end."
WOULD YOU LIKE TO TALK ABOUT THE VERY FIRST BEGINNING OF BAND...
"Very first idea was to play My Dying Bride covers and have a warm place to do some drinking in the weekends, but luckily other aspects came overtook these ideas. Not luckily cos the lack of MDB covers, but the cos lack of drinking. Weve played one MDB cover in Silentiums history. It was For You some five years ago or so, but we still play it occasionally."
WHAT'S ABOUT YOUR PREVIOUS RECORDING-EFFORTS?
"The recordings was done in studio Sundi Coop at Savonlinna and the engineering job was done by the owner of the studio mr Tuomo Valtonen. He made also co-producing with Sami and he truly have some very excellent visions of metal as well as all other kinds of music. He has worked with almost every front line artist of Finland. The recordings itself was quite easy because the atmosphere in studio and the fact we made the recordings of Sufferion also in that very same studio."
WHAT'S ABOUT YOUR FOLLOWING?
"Nothing specific is planned yet for the future. But I think that we will record our next album in late 2007 or in the beginning of 2008. (Im not sure was the question about this?)"
THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTS IN YOUR HISTORY?
"The very first big thing is of course the first record deal with Spikefarm. It opened lots of doors to us and we could get to make gigs in places we could only dream of earlier. We also supported Nightwish at their gig in Jyvskyl in 2001. Aftermath of that was also Tuomas Holopainen being the producer of the album Sufferion and gaining the friendship of that great person and musician. Third big thing is our first gig outside Finland being one of the attendances of the first Artmania festival in Romania with Amorphis and HIM."
ANY INTRODUCTIVE WORDS TO "FROSTNIGHT"? IT SEEMS YOUR SOUND IS QUITE GOTHIC ORIENTED... I NOTICED A GOOD BALANCE BETWEEN HARMONY AND EPIC PATTERNS...
"Its a straightforward metal anthem. Some orchestrations are included. The use of cello as a solo instrument came out really well. Beautiful vocals by Riina. With all things included, its a good example of the raw but controlled Silentian energy."
THE MAIN ISSUES OF YOUR SOUND?
"The raging guitars, the bold bass and the powerful drumming. The epic instrumentations of massive, bright orchestrations, keys and guitar melodies."
ANY PARTICULAR CONCEPT CONCERNING THE ALBUM?
"Well, at least nothing as clear as there was in Sufferion. You have to email Matti to know for sure. Hes the mastermind behind all the Silentian tales. Or maybe he wants to stay mystical and wont hand anything on a silver plate."
WHAT'S THE MOOD OF IT?
"Gothic, Doomy, Dark, you name it."
THE MOST SALIENT ASPECTS OF YOUR NEW ALBUM?
"The new singer Riina and her astounding capabilities. The drummer has also changed from the previous recordings and the result is better: Jaris style of playing is more groovy and it gives the band great base to build on."
WHAT'S ABOUT THE FEEDBACK?
"Feedback has been both good and worse. Some love the album and some hate it, luckily more listeners love it. The reviews have been more positive and it really gives us belief were doing at least something right."
WHAT DO YOU WANT TO COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR SOUND?
"We have a strong belief that the band cannot define itself or its music, but every listener takes something to him/herself and defines what itll mean to him/her. We just put parts ourselves to our work regarding whatll mean to us. Music communicates differently to each one of us and the listeners."
"Theres always something little and maybe something bigger also. European tour supporting some bigger band would be absolutely fabulous. Lets see what our managers will do about it."
YOUR LIFE'S PHILOSOPHY?
"Live the way you dont have to regret losing the day in the evening."
THE FUTURE OF THE BAND?
"Making the music we love and get living of it. That would be the dream come true, but maybe not in the near future, but who knows. We truly give our effort for gaining that."
ANY LAST REMARKS?
"Thanks for reading and come see us on tour someday. If you like the music, tell your friends about it too.."
