PRESENT YOURSELVES OUR READERS...
Shatterpoint is a 4 piece band from Toronto Ontario, CANADA
WHO ARE SHATTERPOINT AS BAND MEMBERS?
Shatterpoint is made up of 4 guys all from the same neighborhood, featuring
Shane Drake – Vocals and rhythm guitar
Greg Wright – Rhythm and lead guitar
Chris Zeeman – Bass Guitar
Jeremy Baxter - Drums
WHEN DID YOU HAVE FOUNDED THE BAND?
The band was officially founded in early 2003, when we played our first show. We didn’t have a singer then, but the basics of the band were in place.
WOULD YOU LIKE TO TALK ABOUT THE VERY FIRST BEGINNING OF BAND...
The official date shatterpoint was formed is a little foggy. We have all been great friends since kindergarten, and we slowly began to listen to heavy music and eventually we each learned how to play an instrument, with the hopes of eventually forming a band. In 2003 myself (Greg Wright) Shane and Jeremy played a local show, which was the first official thing we had ever done. At this point we were searching for a singer, but it was hard to find anyone we liked and most of the dudes that we did find were complete weirdos and didn’t last very long at all. At that very first show we played a few Slayer and Megadeth covers, as well as some original stuff that myself and Shane had been working on. Eventually we got fed up with looking for a singer and one day Shane decided to write lyrics to a song called Burning angel, and he sung it on our 8 track and played it for me over the phone. I had never even thought of having Shane sing, but once I heard it, I knew the band had its singer. After that, we encouraged our other good friend Chris to start learning the bass so he could be a part of the band. Chris practiced his ass off and integrated his way into the band. About 6 months later we recorded our first demo “Confide in Madness”
WHAT'S ABOUT YOUR PREVIOUS RECORDING-EFFORTS?
At the time of our very first Demo “Confide in madness” the band was called “Catharsis”, however we realized that there was a lot of European bands with a similar name.
I was speaking with Jeff Waters from Annihilator via email and on the phone at that time, about band stuff, and the business, and he actually suggested that we find a new name. So that’s what we did, and “Shatterpoint” ended up being the new name. We “recorded Confide in Madness” at BWC studio’s in Brampton Ontario, and it was an 11 song demo which gave us our opportunity to show people what we are all about. Confide, was never released “officially” but we did burn well over 1000 copies and give them our at all of our shows. So I’m sure there are a lot out there somewhere.
In 2004 we recorded “Consequences” (again at BWC studios). ‘Consequences’ is a 6 song demo, which we recorded with full intentions of releasing. We put a lot more effort into this one, and our goal was to use Consequenes to show the world what Shatterpoint is all about. We received 100’s of emails and reviews about Consequences and the feedback was unreal. We played tons of local shows promoting the CD and our band in the Toronto area, and in February of 2005, we began our relationship with Power Play Records. Powerplay was very encouraged with what we were doing and asked for some new material, too see what the band had to offer. Over the summer of 2005 we sent Power Play 3 of our newest songs and they liked them, so in the fall we recorded our newest, and first FULL LENGTH CD, titled “DEAD PRECEDENCE” which is an 11 song album slated for release with Power Play Records in late spring 2006.
WHAT'S ABOUT YOUR FOLLOWING?
We have a great following locally, and within the last year I have been getting tons of emails from all across the world, from fans asking for CD’s and anything else they can get their hands on. The response from ‘Consequences’ has been great, which is why I am so pumped up about the release of “Dead Precedence”

2 – Todays Promises are Tomorrows lies
3 – Thorn Inside

The Album was recorded at BWC studios and produced by Greg Dawson
It is similar in a way to “Consequences” but also very different. Dead Precedence is packed full of more Riffs, and Changes, and has a more diverse assortment of tracks. There is no letting up with this CD, no ballads, just full on ripping metal. The is some much faster stuff on this CD then Consequences, and in my opinion is a little “less safe” and more extreme.
THE SOUND REMINDS ME A MIX OF BAY AREA THRASH AND TYPICAL ANTHRAX TRADEMARKS, DO YOU AGREE?
Sure, I agree with that. There are definitely some of those influences in there, but there is also some European influences as well. I am not too sure how to classify our sound, or the new album, but the term Thrash is a good start.
WHAT'S ABOUT THE PRODUCTION OF ALBUM?
We spent just about 4 weeks in the studio recording this album, we took a lot of time getting the perfect sounds, and then we got to work. The production is a step above the last effort, and has a very current sound to it, much like a Soilwork or The Haunted type of production.
ANY PARTICULAR CONCEPT CONCERNING THE ALBUM?
The main “concept” of dead precedence is basically that in the world today, there is no standards, no values, and basically the precedence of the “old world” is dead. The main cause of this is corruption and money, which is also known as Dead presidents, so dead precedence has a type of double meaning.
WHAT'S THE MOOD OF IT?
The Mood, of the CD is pretty much pissed off attitude 90% of the time, with a bit of singing. Overall the Album is relentless, and does not let up from the first song to the last. Deciding the track listing was very hard because we all liked each song so much; we wanted each song to be near the start, which I guess is a good thing.
THE MOST SALIENT ASPECTS OF YOUR NEW ALBUM?
I think the Riffs on the new album stand out a lot, they are the back bone of the song. The diversity of the singing is also very cool, as it ranges from deep cut throat vocals up to some cleaner singing at times.
WHAT'S ABOUT THE FEEDBACK?
So far there has been very little feedback, we are finishing up the artwork, and we have not let too many people hear the new CD, so we are very exicted to have everyone out there hear it. Those who have heard it, cant say enough good things about it, which is getting us pretty pumped up.
WHAT DO YOU WANT TO COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR SOUND?
We aren’t really looking to communicate as much as we are just stating our opinion on matters we feel to be important. We are not very political, we just write about what we see going on around us, which at times is pretty fucked up.
We have a few ideas or the summer time, and we are looking forward to releasing the album as soon as possible so we can get out on the road this summer and promote the shit out of it.
YOUR LIFE'S PHILOSOPHY?
I think my life’s philosophy may differ from the other guys in the band, but since I am the one doing the interview, lets give you mine. Personally I believe in hard work, and expecting nothing from anyone except myself. I think that the world is out there for the taking but no one is going to do it for us. So with this band we are working hard and taking our fate/lives into our own hands, and bringing Shatterpoint to the world with hard work, and crazy riffs, and some pumping metal.
THE FUTURE OF THE BAND?
Since the formation of the band we have been steadily climbing towards our goals, and in the future we plan on continuing to rise as a heavy hitter in the world metal scene, and are ambitious to get out there, meet all our fans and play with other bands who know how to rock.
I just want to say whats up to the fans of Italy and Europe and let them know that DEAD PRECEDENCE will be available there soon, within the next few months, so keep an eye out for it, buy it and then let me know what you think.
