INTERVIEW TO SEVERE TORTURE
WHO
ARE SEVERE TORTURE AS BAND MEMBERS?
"The present line-up consists of
Patrick- Bass
Marvin- Guitar
Thijs- Guitar
Seth- Drums
Dennis- Vocals."
WHEN DID YOU HAVE FOUNDED THE BAND?
"The band started in 1997, but with a different line-up. Instead of Dennis
we had Eric on vocals, but he left in 1999 to join Sinister. And instead
Marvin we had a guy called Jelle on guitars, but he had to leave in 1998
since he just didn't fit in. Marvin joined the band in 2003.."
WOULD YOU LIKE TO TALK ABOUT THE VERY FIRST BEGINNING OF BAND...
"We started the band because we wanted to play death metal, at that time
there were not many death metal bands around in Holland, because death
metal wasn't popular. We just wanted to play the music we loved. So we
started writing some tunes and in 1998 we recorded our first demo called
"Baptized in Virginal Liquid". We did some shows and tried to get a record
deal but nobody was interested, I guess we sucked, hahaha. So in 1999
we recorded a new demo, this time we did get an offer and we signed to
Fadeless records, lead by Wilko, who is now head of Relapse in Europe.
Fadeless joined forces with Hammerheart Records on which we released "Feasting
On Blood" in 1999. After that all shit broke loose, hehe."
WHAT'S
ABOUT YOUR PREVIOUS RECORDING-EFFORTS?
"Before we started Severe Torture we never recorded anything. Severe Torture
was our first real band."
WHAT'S ABOUT YOUR FOLLOWING?
"We are very lucky to have the following we have, we sold more records
than we and Hammerheart ever could suspect. All we can hope for now is
that people haven't forgotten us, we haven't been on tour from 2 1/2 years.
We had like 3 tours cancelled on us. We were pissed off that's for sure,
so we decided just to focus on a new record and forget about the tours."
THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTS IN YOUR HISTORY?
"Well first is the fact that me, Thijs and Seth decided to not only be
drunk all the time we should be drunk and play the music we love most.
Second is the signing to Fadeless records which lead to the release of
"Feasting on Blood. Third is the European tour with Macabre, Broken Hope
and Die Apokalyptischen Reiter. That was the first time people in Europe
got the chance to see us live. Fourth is all the shows we did in the US,
which gave us a start in the US. Fifth is the release of "Misanthropic
Carnage" and the tour with Cannibal Corpse that followed right after.
Sixth is the fact that Marvin joined our band, he gave the band the extra
it needed!"
COULD YOU INTRODUCE YOUR NEW ALBUM TITLED 'BLOOD LETTING'?
"Well "Bloodletting" is the title of our last album for Hammerheart/Karmageddon.
We owed them 2 albums, but we wanted to move on. Guido, the head of Karmageddon,
was cool enough to work out something so we could go, of course he didn't
have to but the deal we made works in his favour, hehe, no hard feelings.
Bloodletting contains a live show we recorded in Denmark. The show turned
out to be pretty good and we are very satisfied with the sound of it.
Further more there is a cover of Pestilence's Lost Souls and we added
our demo 'Baptized in Virginal Luiqid'."
SATISFIED WITH THE SUPPORT OF KARMAGEDDON MEDIA?
"We are satisfied of the work they have done sofar, it's our last release
for them."
WHAT'S ABOUT THE PRODUCTION OF ALBUM?
"The album sounds very good especially the live songs turned out very
good. The demo was remastered and sound better than before, still it's
a demo."
WHAT'S THE MOOD OF IT?
"Well the live songs are just us playing some brutal tunes!"
THE SOUND IS VERY BRUTAL AND RAW, RIGHT?
"Yep, it's the way we wanted it to be and ofcourse live is always brutal
and raw!"
THE MOST SALIENT ASPECTS OF YOUR NEW ALBUM?
"The most important things is that it is not a new album only a live album
plus extra's. It is our last release for Karmageddon!"
WHAT'S ABOUT THE FEEDBACK?
"We had good and bad reviews. Most heard complaint is the fact that it
is to early for a live album. I agree but you have to keep in mind why
we did this release. But hey, we don't force people to buy this record.
But if you want to hear how brutal and tight we are live then you just
have to listen to it. We did get compliments on the Pestilence cover!
We are very pleased with that cover to, it shows what we are capable of
besides just playing as fast and brutal as possible, hehe. Also the demo
was no longer available so we did get some good feedback on that as well!"
WHAT DO YOU WANT TO COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR SOUND?
"We just want to play for brutal death metal fans all over the world.
We are fans as well, we just happen to play in a band."
TOURING PLANS?
"First we are finishing our new album that will be released trough a yet
to be announced label. I guess it will be a late summer release. After
that we will do everything we can to tour a couple of time in Europe for
that release! So keep your eyes open on news on our new album, label and
shows!!! All I can say now is, stay drunk, brutal and ugly!!"
