:: INTERVIEW TO MORTUS
FOUR
ALBUMS IS A GOOD SCORE, RIGHT?
In general itīs not easy to answer this question, because i think it depends
on the case. We started to record our music very early. Of course, we were
pretty unexperienced when we recorded our first album. Every following album
shows more development concerning musical skills as well as a view for the
music as a whole, as its predecessor. It is a sign of endurance and coherence
between the members or at least the core of the band.
DID YOU THINK A DAY TO REACH THIS SCORE?
I think when we wrote our first album we never thought about recording another
three one.
FOUR
ALBUMS IS A PROOF OF GOOD ARTISTIC VITALITY OF YOUR BAND...
Yes. The job of the second guitar was staffed with different persons. Even
though that the first man behind the second guitar was one of the founders
ot the band, there were personal reasons that let us drift apart. Equally
the second casting was not for a long duration because of the same reasons.
Now we have found a guitar player, that fits with his personal attributes
as well as with his musical taste. He has done the vokals and played the
guitar at "septic cemetery" and we were good friends before.
WOULD YOU LIKE TO TALK ABOUT THESE FOUR ALBUMS?
Sometimes we listen to one of our first albums and we have to smile about
some details. Pherhaps because we are confronted with our past, our youth,
our phase of some kind of revolution. Of course this means also a confrontation
with mistakes, of failures and errors. In a nutshell the first albums are
a symbol for the musical and the personal development in everyone of us.
IN WHICH WAYS IS THE FOURTH ALBUM THE NATURAL FOLLOWER FIRST THREE
ONES?
The connection to the first albums to the latest on is obvious. With our
first album we started with death metal. The sound was filthy, the music
was fast and very aggressive and the lyrics told sick thoughts and dreams,
that was a reflection of my youthful phase of revolution. Every following
album gained more maturity and developed almost a new style. Sometimes we
feel somekind of insulted if the music of our latest album is still called
death metal because for us it would mean that we havenīt experienced any
development since the first album.
WOULD YOU LIKE TO TALK ABOUT YOUR NEW ALBUM?
Our music and our friendship have a big therapeutic purpose. They offer
the possibility to escape the swamp of the everyday life and help us to
solve personal problems. This message we want to spread convey among our
fans. The Butterfly on the cover is a symbol for a kind of messenger who
carries our music out from the swamps of our lives, into civilization. We
are now going to offer more videos and short movies of our drummer crack
on our homepage for free, to show that Mortus is more then a band.
WHAT'S ABOUT THE VARIOUS PHASES OF ITS PRODUCTION?
We all bring our own part into a new composition. In the course of time
we have become more open minded for this. That means that all proposals
are being heard. Every idea is allowed and will used for composing. This
procedure isn't easy sometimes, but we are going to improve. Everyone of
us is influenced from the Bands we listen to.
ARE YOU SATISFIED WITH THE FINAL RESULTS ACHIEVED?
The satisfaction with the obtained record is almost the same after each
album. We try to ban our music to cd and realize all of our ideas. Sometimes
it goes like clockwork, sometimes it shows you your borders. After the work
is done, we are mostly very satisfied with the endresult. After the first
time of listening the tracks a thousand times everyone of us discovers some
details he would rather have done in another way. This is ok, because i
think this is a kind of learning process.
WHICH ITS MOST INTERESTING ASPECTS?
After recording the album we noticed that some tracks have changed compared
to the versions we have written before. In the end one of our common favourite
songs changed to someone we would improve if we could, and one of the less
rousing tracks transformed to our favourite. Particularly "the good son"
was one of those songs. When we finished the song there was a different
arrangement and also another refrain. The ideas to accomplish the track
were born in the studio and after recording this was our favourite track.
I'D LIKE TO KNOW ITS MOOD?
All we want is to be authentic. If someone isn't interested in our believes,
he should just listen. Our music alone tells a lot of stories. However,
we managed it very well to fit the mood of the music to the content of the
lyrics. "New Born Sun" for example, tells about the pregnancy of jays wife,
the birth of his daughter and the emotions of the era of time. It's possible
that the lyrics are theatrical, but it will be said, what has to be said.
HOW DO YOU DEFINE YOUR SOUND?
I think if someone listens to the album precisely, our roots are recognizable.
We can't deny them. Often, we are thinking about the category, which would
classify our music. We hate this kind of thinking in classification rules.
In a review I once a read: "Open minded Metal Music for Open minded People".
I think this would describe at least the manner we perceive our way of making
music, perhaps even our style. Metal with a portion Rock and a dash Independent.
This would be my description of our new CD. Maybe some people would shake
their head, but this is the way we experience our music.
ANY LAST REMARKS?
Meynard James Keanen after a Tool - Concert in Vienna: " And now go home
and do somthing positive!"
