We are MIRROR OF DECEPTION, a Doom Metal band from the Stoccarda, Germany area.
WHO ARE MIRROR OF DECEPTION AS BAND MEMBERS?
Michael "Siffi" Siffermann (vocals & guitar), Andreas Taller (bass), Jochen "Josef" Mueller (drums & vocals) and me, Jochen Fopp (guitar).
WHEN DID YOU HAVE FOUNDED THE BAND?
Siffi and me started MIRROR in 1990. We went through a couple of line-up changes and the current band has been working together since 2003.
WOULD YOU LIKE TO TALK ABOUT THE VERY FIRST BEGINNING OF BAND...
We wanted to play music in the vein of our fave bands CANDLEMASS and SANCTUARY. It became clear very soon that the Doom influence was more dominant. It took us more than a year to find a drummer and in spring 1992 we had the first full line-up. The first local gig was played at the end of that year and the debut demo was recorded in early 1993. The weird thing was, that the very first fan letter came from New Zealand. I did also send a demo to John Perez of SOLITUDE AETURNUS who gave us a good response which was very encouraging. At the end of 1993 we played our first bigger show as local support for COUNT RAVEN.
WHAT'S ABOUT YOUR PREVIOUS RECORDING-EFFORTS?
We recorded a couple of demo tapes and a mini-CD in the 90s. The debut album, "Mirrorsoil" was planned to be released in 1998, but due to lot of delays it came out in 2001. Another mini-CD, "Conversion" was released in 2003, followed by the second album, "Foregone" in 2004 and album numero tre, "Shards" in October 2006. "Conversion", "Foregone" and "Shards" are still available at our online shop and the albums at most European metal mailorders. Everything else is sold out.
WHAT'S ABOUT YOUR FOLLOWING?
It's a good feeling that we have fans all over the world. But it's still growing with every new release and every concert. It's much easier these days to present the band online than it was in our early days before the internet. I think most Doom fan have at least heard our name meanwhile.
THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTS IN YOUR HISTORY?
We never cared for trends and never changed our style to something more "popular". We've started as a Doom Metal band and will remain that until we split up one day.
ANY INTRODUCTIVE WORDS TO "SHARDS"?
If you like your Metal soulful, powerful, diverse, heavy and with an own identity check us out.
DOOM METAL IS THE ONLY ONE HOLY LAW, RIGHT?
For me it is. I can't imagine to play any other style of Metal with the same dedication and feeling. And when I pick up a guitar and start to play it simply sounds like Doom.
I DEFINE YOUR SOUND AS PACHIDERMIC SLOW MOTION...
That's a good description. Even though an elephant's skin can be thinner than expected. And they have a good memory.
WHAT'S ABOUT THE PRODUCTION OF ALBUM?
We are very satisfied with it. We went to the same studio where we recorded "Foregone". We wanted a recognisable, warm and natural sound with soul and a rough edge as we feel it suits our music best. It's not the triggered, polished and overproduced plastic sound you hear on so many Metal albums today.
ANY PARTICULAR CONCEPT CONCERNING THE ALBUM?
"Shards" is about different aspects of souls and existences which became shattered or broken. And it's also about the question what remains and will be remembered of a single human being in a distant future. Sometimes it's not more than a few broken personal belongings that will tell a story. Our bassplayer is studying archeology so that might be where this interpretation comes from.
WHAT'S THE MOOD OF IT?
There are many different moods on this album. From depression and despair to melancholy and also more positive and uplifting moments. As diverse as life itself.
WHAT'S ABOUT THE FEEDBACK?
Generally it has been very positive. The fans and most reviewers like the new album. We were "album of the month" at Doom-Metal.com and some other webzines and mags. But there were some less positive reviews as well. You can't please everybody.
WHAT DO YOU WANT TO COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR SOUND?
There's no special hidden message. MIRROR OF DECEPTION is an expression of our thoughts, feelings and experiences in music and lyrics. If there's a message then it'll be: stay true to yourself, don't follow trends, gain strength out of good and bad moments in life and do what you do with honesty, stamina and dedication.
TOURING PLANS?
We were asked to support TROUBLE on their European tour, but that didn't work out. We've just played some shows in Ireland (Dublin) and Northern Ireland (Belfast) which was a great experience. There will soon be a tour diary on our website. Doom Shall Rise V is next and maybe we can arrange some shows with our brothers THUNDERSTORM in Italy at some point.

Playing more gigs and recording the next album in 2008.
