Interview to DEPRESSION
PRESENT YOURSELVES OUR READERS...
"Hi, I am Kai Sattelkau, founder and songwriter for the old school, grovvy Death/grind band DEPRESSION."
WHO ARE DEPRESSION AS BAND MEMBERS?
"It´s me on drums, guitars, sometimes bass, screams and other shit, Marc Miekeley is responsible for the growls and bass and Ron Sanders, doing the guttural grunts, weird shrieks and lyrics."
WHEN DID YOU HAVE FOUNDED THE BAND?
"I have founded the band back in autumn 1989, and I released the first demo-tape in 1990."
WOULD YOU LIKE TO TALK ABOUT THE VERY FIRST BEGINNING OF BAND...
"I started the band as a solo-project back in 1989. I found DEPRESSION because I wanted to play the kind of music that I loved to listen to: groovy Death/Grind. So I started to write songs by my own. After two demos Marc joined as a growler and we released another two demos befor the first official vinyl-EP. The rest is history."
WHAT'S ABOUT YOUR PREVIOUS RECORDING-EFFORTS?
"If you don´t have ´em, GET ´EM, haha! Well, almost all our previous releases contain groovy Death/Grind with powerful, hevay but still raw sound, always a cover-song is included, with nice packaging and all stuff is limited, so you have a collectors item. Most of the stuff is sold out, but the newer releases are still availabel at the labels or good mailorders."
WHAT'S ABOUT YOUR FOLLOWING?
"We have a die-hard following for many years now! DEPRESSION is dedicated to the underground, and so are our fans. Our fan-base is die-hard and they have all DEPRESSION releases in their collection. Maybe we don´t have tenthousands of fans, but the couple of thousands we have believe in DEPRESSION! Some of them fly tenthousand kilometers from the USA to Germany to see us playing live. That makes us proud!"
THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTS IN YOUR HISTORY?
"Every new release is important for us, because we don´t play live that much. So a new release is a new sign of life for DEPRESSION. The fact that Marc joined the band, and later that Ron joined us, were the most important facts in our history, because the triumvirat of the three of us create the sound what people might know as DEPRESSION."
ANY INTRODUCING WORDS FOR "EIN KAKOPHONISCHER LEBENSHAUCH"?
"It is our first live-recording, and it is from our very last gig in October 2006. So it is a historical document and you can listen to songs from all step of our existing. The songs are quite different than on the studio-recordings, so even if you have all DEPRESSION material, you can listen to the new versions of our songs. As a bonus we have a new and exclusive bonus-track on the CD as well."
THE SOUND IS VERY GRIND...
"Because we love it ! But it is not typical and traditional Grind. Our main influence is old school Death Metal, and we mix it with Grindcore, so we got a special DEPRESSION sound that exist for almost 15 years now."
DO YOU HAVE PUNK/HARDCORE INFLUENCES IN YOUR MUSIC?
"Yes, definitely. The Punk-influences are obvious, and we have a lot of Crust influences, because it fits perfect to our style. The HC influences are only a few and only in some parts, we also have minor Black metal influences. Old school (swedish) Death metal, with Grindcore, Crust and Punk, that is the main DEPRESSION sound."
WHAT'S ABOUT THE PRODUCTION OF ALBUM?
"The Demos were all recorded by myself with even NO budget in my living room. Since our first vinyl "Ein Hauch von Moder" in January 1996, we used to record at legendary K-Sound Studio in a twon next to our home-town. The studio is perfect for us, as the producer and owner Mathias Klinkmann is also our session-live-guitarist. Our brand new record "Unglaube", a split-CD with Paganizer was recorded at another studio, because K-Sound studio didn´t exist anymore. The new studio is the Sunset Studio, and his owner is Skaldir, some of you might know him as member from Hel, Elane or Aphelion."
ANY PARTICULAR CONCEPT CONCERNING THE ALBUM?
"DEPRESSION has no particula concept for their releases. There is no story or something behind it. But it is very important to have a nice and special layout, and that should fit within the release. So the colours and the motives for a release are not totally different. The lyrica component is part from Ron, and he is writing lyrics about a lot of different stuff. No special concept for a single release."
WHAT'S THE MOOD OF IT?
"The mood of the lyrics are always depressive, the mood of the layout is always beautiful, the mood of the music is straight, and the mood of the musicians is stupid, hehe."
THE MOST SALIENT ASPECTS OF YOUR NEW ALBUM?
"The most important aspect of "Einkakophonischer Lebenshauch" is, that the labum is a live-recording! The most important aspect of the split-CD with Paganizer is, that it cointains brand-new studio tracks from us, the first recordings in the Sunset-Studio and the first new songs from us since a year. The most salient aspect is fpr sure that it is a split-CD with godly PAGANIZER!!"
WHAT'S ABOUT THE FEEDBACK?
"The feedback from press and fans is quite good! Poeple know what they get when they listen to DEPRESSION, and so the people who like musick from Blood, Agathocles, Impetigo, Mortician, Dead or Gut, they also like DEPRESSION. We get almost good to brilliant reviews, because our sound is brutal as fuck, but not to clean and polished, the layout and the booklets are with love to the detail and our releases are always in high-quality packaging. The fans likes it a lot that we still play the brutal, old school way that most bands lost nowadays."
WHAT DO YOU WANT TO COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR SOUND?
"We have no special message. Just have fun, lsiten to the musick you grow up with and get the feeling of Metal. We are not technical perfect, but we have the right feeling to create Death Metal, that is far more important in my opinion."
"There will be no touring, nor any single gig. Maybe we will play a show to celebrate our 20th anniversray in the end of 2009, but no extended touring for DEPRESSION."
YOUR LIFE'S PHILOSOPHY?
"Life is hard and then you die"
THE FUTURE OF THE BAND?
"In 2008 we will release a couple of new CDs, split-CDs, split-EPs and MCs, so we are still very active after almost 19 years of existence!!"
ANY LAST REMARKS?
