PRESENT YOURSELVES OUR READERS...
DEMIGOD is a finnish death/thrash metal band formed in 1990. The band has released two albums so far: Slumber of Sullen Eyes (1992) and Shadow Mechanics (2002). The up-coming third album is planned to be released in 2007.
WHO ARE DEMIGOD AS BAND MEMBERS?
Tuomas: We are five different, and difficult hah, guys who have similar kinds of passions towards metal music. Jussi Kiiski (guitar) is nowadays the mastermind behind DEMIGOD}s music. He took the lead after the former frontman Esa Linden left the band some years before the SHADOW MECHANICS album.
Sami Vesanto (bass) writes also some music and Tero Laitinen (guitar) writes most of the lyrics. He gets a lot of inspiration from movies, but I think he also writes about what he sees around him in the society. I mean crimes, wars, sick people etc. Tuomo Latvala (drums) is a very talented guy, who joined the band after the release of SHADOW MECHANICS. He got somehow similar drumming style of what Seppo Taatila (our ex-drummer) did on both of our albums. And I (Tuomas Ala-Nissilń, vocals) joined the band in 2001. I try to create catchy vocal parts in every new DEMIGOD tune. And I also try to sing the older songs as they were recorded in the old days.
WHEN DID YOU HAVE FOUNDED THE BAND?
Tuomas: In august 1990. Esa, Tero, Seppo and Erik Parviainen (guitar) ruined their former thrash metal bands and wanted to do something more brutal. So they formed DEMIGOD. In the early days the music was pure death metal, but quite soon there appeared more and more thrash metal influences also.
WOULD YOU LIKE TO TALK ABOUT THE VERY FIRST BEGINNING OF BAND...
Tuomas: As far as I know there was a sort of pre-DEMIGOD band called INTERNAL DENIAL, which was the very first death metal band from Loimaa. The first death metal records had just been released. I mean bands like CARCASS, ENTOMBED, OBITUARY, DEATH, POSSESSED, PESTILENCE, AUTOPSY BOLT THROWER, PARADISE LOST; they were all a big influence for us. The finnish death metal scene was small but active at the time. There were bands like FUNEBRE, XYSMA, ABHORRENCE and DISGRACE, who were the first ones. And soon after them came DEMIGOD. Afterwards it seems that everything in the growing death metal scene happened so fast in 1989-1991. It was a great time.
WHAT'S ABOUT YOUR PREVIOUS RECORDING-EFFORTS?
TUOMAS: Well, I have experiences about the SHADOW MECHANICS sessions. I joined this band in a situation when the album was almost recorded, but all vocal parts were still undone. So I did my vocal parts and a few more, which didn}t end up to the final version. Then Ali (Leini÷) did his vocal parts and Mika (Haapasalo) his too. All the way through that session, we tried to share the vocal parts and think what would be the best for any particular song. That}s why there}s so different kind of songs on the same album.
WHAT'S ABOUT YOUR FOLLOWING?
TUOMAS: I Just can}t wait, although the studio time is always so stressful. We have practised this time, hah hah, or at least more than last time.
THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTS IN YOUR HISTORY?
TUOMAS: Our releases so far; SLUMBER OF SULLEN EYES, SHADOW MECHANICS and one split-ep. One very important moment in the near future must be when Tuomo joined the band. Without him we pretty damn sure wouldn}t exist anymore!
ANY INTRODUCTIVE WORDS FOR "SLUMBER OF SULLEN EYES"?
Tuomas: At that time DEMIGOD had been around hardly 2 years. The songs on that album were a bit more technical than on our UNHOLY DOMAIN -demo 1991. The response was quite good in the underground scene and we still seem to get mail concerning SLUMBER even today. Esa wrote most of the tunes on that album, but Jussi made also many good riffs too.
THE SOUND IS QUITE EIGHTIES ORIENTED, RIGHT?
TUOMAS: I guess at that time the goal was to make as brutal death metal album as possible. Only few finnish acts had made a complete death metal album before us, so it was quite interesting time too. We wanted to show the UG scene what we are all about and beat the other finnish bands (FUNEBRE, XYSMA, SENTENCED, DISGRACE, AMORPHIS) and especially their albums. So the aim was to sound extremely brutal and aggressive and I think we succeeded pretty well, hah.
There was nothing special idea to sound like }80s thrash metal bands.
WHICH BANDS DO HAVE MOSTLY INFLUENCED YOUR WAY TO PLAY?
Tuomas: In the very beginning we were influenced by bands like CARCASS, ENTOMBED, BOLT THROWER, OBITUARY and SLAYER/KREATOR Even before DEMIGOD, but on SLUMBER OF SULLEN EYES you might hear a small influences from bands like POSSESSED and INFERNAL MAJESTY here and there. At that time we tried to do something unique and nowadays we are even more critical towards our material. We want to stay unique.
WHAT'S ABOUT THE PRODUCTION OF ALBUM?
TUOMAS: We didn}t have a producer, so there was only the mastermind Esa Linden and his visions about how the album should sound like. Few mistakes remained on the album, but all in all it turned out well and SLUMBER is a clear evidence of how DEMIGOD sounded in 1992.
ANY PARTICULAR CONCEPT CONCERNING THE ALBUM?
TUOMAS: No, not really. SLUMBER is just a punch of fast, midtempo and slow death metal songs and the lyrics are more or less fantasy of life, death, misery and dying. So nothing political or satanic can be found there.
WHAT'S THE MOOD OF IT?
TUOMAS: As I just listened the reissue of SLUMBER, the mood was dark and arrogant in-your-face death metal, nothing more, nothing less.
THE MOST SALIENT ASPECTS OF YOUR NEW ALBUM?
TUOMAS: You mean our up-coming 3rd album or SHADOW MECHANICS? Well, SHADOW MECHANICS is a compilation of very different songs. It was an important album at least for us, because after that we decided to continue with some fresh blood and new ideas.
WHAT'S ABOUT THE FEEDBACK?
TUOMAS: The response has been mostly good. Of course you have to have a very open mind and be in a certain mood, before you might be able to listen the whole album through, because of the musical contrasts on it.
WHAT DO YOU WANT TO COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR SOUND?
TUOMAS: Nothing special really. I suppose we just want that every instrument can be heard clearly. I just thought one day that we still haven}t found the typical DEMIGOD sound, so we keep on searching. I mean every DEMIGOD production sounds a bit different from eachother.
TUOMAS: Actually, yes. We have discussed about touring in Spain and Portugal in the fall of 2006, but that is just a plan. I can}t tell the actual tourdates yet. As soon as we know something we}ll put the information on our webpages, www.demigod.tv and www.myspace.com/demigodband.
YOUR LIFE'S PHILOSOPHY?
TUOMAS: What doesn}t kill you, makes you really pissed off. Noooh, just kidding. I haven}t thought about it too much, but it might be something like do whatever you want to do as long as you don}t hurt somebody else or something like that!
THE FUTURE OF THE BAND?
TUOMAS: Our future looks quite clear. We have already plans to do 4th DEMIGOD album, although we haven}t finished the recordings of the 3rd one yet. We have rehearsed a lot and played quite a lot of gigs too with this line-up and we get along with eachother pretty well, so I don}t see any reason why we should give up with this band. This is what we want to do!
