We´re a punkish rock/metal act called DEFUSE and we´re hailing from cold and remote Finland...
WHO ARE DEFUSE AS BAND MEMBERS?
Defuse are: Hylzy Hyvärinen – vocals, Arto Ahonen – lead guitar, Timo Hämäläinen – rhythm guitar, Jerkko Tapaninen – drums and Tero Karjalainen – bass
WHEN DID YOU HAVE FOUNDED THE BAND?
The band was founded in the end of the year 2000 in Kuopio, by Hylzy and Arto when they met in a bar, and after chatting they came up with this idea to bring back the attitude to rock.
WOULD YOU LIKE TO TALK ABOUT THE VERY FIRST BEGINNING OF BAND...
When Arto and Hylzy started to find players for the band, Hylzy´s cousin Timo was found for the second guitar, Jerkko was found for the drums stool from Arto´s other projects and the first bassplayer Ville came up with Jerkko. When we all moved to Helsinki a year later, Ville wasn´t interested of playing as much as the other ones. So we caught Tero from the rehearsal place where we were practicing, he was playing in the other band in the same place and his gear were already there. That was an easy switch and the man got great attitude...
WHAT'S ABOUT YOUR PREVIOUS RECORDING-EFFORTS?
We´ve made one demo and one EP with Ville in bass, and then one single with Tero before the debut album. So the studio work is pretty familiar for us...
WHAT'S ABOUT YOUR FOLLOWING?
The new material is in the making, we have made some preproduction of the new songs. But there´s no rush yet, it´s not even a year from the debut. We´re about to release a single before summer so there´s some new stuff for the market but the full length album is coming in future.
THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTS IN YOUR HISTORY?
When we moved to Helsinki and made first gigs in here. That was a step forward and after 100 gigs, we have reached a significant status. The status has come from hard and stubborn work, not from over night success and media hype.
ANY INTRODUCTIVE WORDS TO YOUR ALBUM?
It starts with a punch in yer face by the song ”Straight in two”, the whole album is a rollercoaster ride, fast and bouncing. But you have to concentrate to it, it´s not music for the background while you vacuum-clean the house. Just crank up the volume, crab a beer and party...
THE SOUND IS THE TYPICAL SCADINAVIAN PUNK CRUNCH...
Don´t think it´s that typical. It´s a mix from all the influences we´ve got plus the extra evil twist from ”tongue in cheek” metal upbringing, devilhorns above it. RAWK AND ROLL, HELL YEAH...
I FEEL POWER AND ENERGY IN YOUR SOUND, RIGHT?
Those are the main ingredients of our music, raw power with melodies, energetic attitude with harmonies. And in live situation the power and energy are even more crushing.
WHAT'S ABOUT THE PRODUCTION OF ALBUM?
I think it´s somewhat lacking the live playing´s power and mood, but overall it´s quite good considering the budget we had from the label. The material on the album is on high standard, all the songs are evenly as good and justified. That means there´s no fillers.
ANY PARTICULAR CONCEPT CONCERNING THE ALBUM?
There´s no particular concept but you can find some notions, for exc. leaving the past and facing the forthcoming.
WHAT'S THE MOOD OF IT?
The mood is over all uplifting and stimulating, but there´s also little downer side to it. As in life in general got ups and downs, you can´t always go with a happy neither a dull face.
THE MOST SALIENT ASPECTS OF YOUR NEW ALBUM?
It´s going to be heavier and mid-tempo oriented, bit darker. The new stuff draws a comparison to 70`s heavy metal or hard rock. At least those are the main feelings of couple of the songs that are finished, others are yet to be done.
WHAT'S ABOUT THE FEEDBACK?
That has been mainly great, but there´s always somebody who don´t get it. Our stuff is still a sub genre thing, but we´re hopeful it´s going to make a crossover success.
WHAT DO YOU WANT TO COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR SOUND?
To put every trouserleg flap, to get people up and moving. Forget about your normal life and all the crap, just feel the groove and dance...
TOURING PLANS?
We´re concentrating on writing new material from now on, put still doing some gigs to promote the album. We are definitely going to do some festival gigs during summer. If we manage to get the second album out by next fall, we´re going to do a major tour everywhere we possibly can then.
YOUR LIFE'S PHILOSOPHY?
Live fast, party hard, drink and have nice time with beautiful ladies all around the world.
THE FUTURE OF THE BAND?
We´re going to put the second album out, tour everywhere, make a living out of the band, quit our lowsy dayjobs. Make the band as big as we can...
ANY LAST REMARKS?
When DEFUSE is in town, come see us putting all effort to the Rock. We´re not a trendy shit, that´s going down the drain next week. It´s allways a full-on experience to see DEFUSE show and you won´t be disappointed.
