INTERVIEW TO CRYPTIC WINTERMOON

WHO ARE CRYPTIC WINTERMOON AS BAND MEMBERS?

WHEN DID YOU HAVE FOUNDED THE BAND?
"Cryptic Wintermoon was founded in the year 1993. So we are around quite
a long time now."
WOULD
YOU LIKE TO TALK ABOUT THE VERY FIRST BEGINNING OF BAND...
"CRYPTIC WINTERMOON was founded out of former members of the band BLACK
PROPHECIES. With this formation CRYPTIC WINTERMOON played a few local
concerts. In 1995 we recorded the demo-tape "Voyage Dans La Lune", which
was mainly sold in the underground... In March 1997, the MCD "Cryptic
Wintermoon" was recorded in the Frost studios in half a year later in
October the MCD was published without a label. We played lot of concerts
in Germany with bands like DESASTER, NIGHT IN GALES, PURGATORY, AGATHODAIMON,
ANCIENT RITES, IMPENDING DOOM... And managed to make a name in the underground
as a Black/Death/Thrash Metal band. In autumn 1998, CRYPTIC WINTERMOON
released a split EP with the band Lord Astaroth, containing "Shadowland"
(re-recorded) and "Beyond The Night". The split EP was distributed by
Perverted Taste Records. Ars Metalli offered a contract in December 1998.
And so the recordings for the long player "The Age Of Cataclysm" started
in May 1999 in the famous Frost studios, which had developed into a professional
studio. In November the album was released. It contained eleven songs
with 60 minutes playing time. CRYPTIC WINTERMOON finally quit the record
deal with Ars Metalli and signed up with Massacre records.On that Label
we have released The album "A coming Storm" and now our actual longplayer
" Of shadows....and the dark things you fear"."
WHAT'S ABOUT YOUR PREVIOUS RECORDING-EFFORTS?
"Up to now we have recorded an 8Track demotape named"voyage dans la lune",
a mini CD titled"Cryptic wintermoon" wich contains 4 songs, a split EP
called "Franconian Frost" with the band "Lord Astaroth",our first full
album "The age of Cataclysm"and finally the album "A coming storm"."
WHAT'S ABOUT YOUR FOLLOWING?
"We havn´t written a song for our next album. We just finished "of shadows.."
two months ago and we got other things to care about first. We also need
a break in the songwriting process in order to gather new ideas. I guess
we will start the work on our new album sometimes in summer."
THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTS IN YOUR HISTORY?
"Some important facs were, signing the contract with Massacre, playing
some great gigs like Wacken, And at the Moment it´s just: releasing the
new Album."
COULD YOU INTRODUCE YOUR ALBUM TITLED 'OF SHADOWS...'?
"The album contains 10 Songs and 2 instrumentals. The songs are a mix
out of epic blackmetal, Thrashmetal and some Deathmetal. Some songs got
a few samples and electro style keyboards. There are fast, midtempo and
some slow songs on it. The lyrics on the album are about war and some
fantasy like stories. The sound of the album is best we had up to now
and I also think this is (of course) the best album we have produced to
this day."
SATISFIED WITH THE SUPPORT OF MASSACRE RECORDS?
"We are very satisfied with the work Massacre records do for us. We are
not a really big band on that label so we cant expect to be treated with
priority but they do good promotion work and care about shirts and merchandise."
WHAT'S ABOUT THE PRODUCTION OF ALBUM?
"We have recorded this album in the "Frost studios". Its my studio and
we have recorded all our outpust here. We needed about 1 year to record
this album because we always work a lot to make the songs perfect. We
aint got no time limit when we record here. We can record any time - any
day. And we can take some longer time outs if needed. It's a relaxed way
of recording. The album was mixed here and finally mastered by Bruno Kramm
in the "danse macabre" studio."
ANY PARTICULAR CONCEPT CONCERNING THE ALBUM?
"Theres not really a concept. Each song is on it´s own except for the
3 songd in the middle. Those 3 songs belong together and tell one story.
We try to cover a greate spectrum of styles to make the album more exciting
to listen to. I don't like CD´s where one song sounds just like the other.
I think that's not the way. You should be able to listen to the CD and
always find something new."
WHAT'S THE MOOD OF IT?
"The whole album has a dark mood. All songs are about dark things like
war ...etc. That's the reason we titled the album "Of shadows...and the
dark things you fear". The title reflects the mood of the songs and the
lyrics."
THE SOUND IS VERY THRASHY/SPEED ORIENTED, RIGHT?
"Our roots are black- and death metal. On our demotape and our first album
"The age of cataclysm" we played mainly symphonic blackmetal with some
deathmetal influences. Then on "A coming storm" we used more thash- death-
and speedmetal elements to give more variety to our songs. On our actual
album the speed- and Thrash parts took a bigger space in our songs. We
also tried some other new sounds and styles, but we always look that all
keeps balanced."
THE MOST SALIENT ASPECTS OF YOUR NEW ALBUM?
"The whole album is the salient aspect. I like the sound and all the songs.
I think all songs are at the same high level. No song stands out."
WHAT'S ABOUT THE FEEDBACK
"The feedback was great up to now. All people I heard upto now say that
this is our best album we have made upto now."
WHAT DO YOU WANT TO COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR SOUND?
"We wanted to make a "soundtrack" for all the dark side. The album should
spread a dark atmosphere."
TOURING PLANS?
"There are no plans for a tout up to now. All bandmembers are working
full time or are studying. It will be hard for us all to get the days
off at the same time. Maybe if we are lucky it will work out. We got some
weekend club concerts planned and want to try to play some festivals.
We will certainly try our best to play live as often as we can."
YOUR LIFE'S PHILOSOPHY?
"Play metal, have fun, drink beer, live your life !!!"
THE FUTURE OF THE BAND?
"I hope we will sell some records, play some nice concerts and festivals
with other great bands, record a lot of CD´s and mainly have fun."
