:: INTERVIEW TO David
DeFeis FROM VIRGIN STEELE
Virgin
Steele are considere as one of the most important bands in the metal panorama...Do
you feel some kind of pressure about this fact?
Thanks very much for saying so my friend! Ahhh...hmmm...no, not really.
The only pressure we feel is the pressure from within, the drive to constantly
top what we have done in the past, be it a recording or a gig. We are our
own worst critics so we continually strive to improve in all areas. We are
never completely satisfied.
“Invictus” and “House of...” are valued as two masterpieces: the new
album will follow the same way or not?
The new album will be what it will be. We will allow it to be its own thing.
Certainly we are still moving in a logical progression from the Works you
mentioned, so I think you will recognize the style but....I do hope to bring
some new elements in and to push the boundaries of what we do a bit further.
It will be Epic, Heavy, Barbaric, Noble and Romantic!
Virgin
Steele, Manowar, Manilla Road...epic metal seems more alive than before...an
opinion about t he metal of the yesterday, of today, and of tomorrow...
Yes the current state of Metal is quite healthy. I hope it will continue
to be so, and I hope we can continue for as long as there is Life's Blood
in our veins. I think the future of Metal will see a further convergence
of all the various separate genres combining. I think this can be a healthy
thing which will keep Metal alive. It will keep it interesting and also
provide reaction against such convergences, with some Bands re-discovering
and returning to older styles of Metal and putting them forth in new & exciting
ways.
You played in Italy for the second time within few months: what do you
think about the italian audience?
The Italian audience is incredible! Really fantastic! They are very demonstrative
in their displays of affection, which is really wonderful to be a part of.
They always make us feel very Proud and happy to perform for them. We will
certainly return again! MILLE GRAZIE to All who were at those concerts!!!
Do you know some italian bands?
Yes I know a few. I'm friendly with Rhapsody and Labyrinth, and we recently
met Beholder and Lacuna Coil who were very nice.
Virgin
Steele and the theatre...have you some project?
I just completed a "Metal-Operatic" Work called "LILITH", which premiered
in Germany this past June. There will be several more performances of this
Work in September as well as in next years Theater Season. This project
went extremely well. All the dates were sold out.
"The very, very...very basic premise of LILITH is: God gives "Birth"
to Lilith in the Night, and lusts for her. She awakens his Dark, sensual
Nature. God is afraid of Lilith. He finds her ... "uncontrollable", so...
he creates Adam in the Light Of Day, to be more in his own image. Adam &
Lilith meet ... they try to have a hmmm... Romantic Evening ... but all
goes very wrong. Adam wants to be on top ... (sexually & otherwise), and
Lilith wants the same so... they fight! She pushes him away & flies off
on her Glorious Green Wings! Lilith winds up in the Red sea where she cavorts
with Demons and has numerous children. The 3 Black Angels arrive to make
her come back, but she refuses. So... they tell her OK, as punishment 100
of your children will die per day. We will kill them. Lilith says ... "ahhh
Fuck off, I will be the one to do any killing around here!" and so... she
is slowly turned from the Good Mother ... into the Terrible Mother. This
is an exact parallel to what occurred with the destruction of the early
"Pagan" Societies, by the more "organized" Religions. Meanwhile God creates
Eve for Adam, and the plot ... thickens! Of course this synopsis of mine,
is extremely brief. Essential what we are dealing with are male / female
relationships and the schism between the sexes which occurred early on in
our Past."
