:: INTERVIEW TO
GARRY PEPPERD FROM JAGUAR - versione italiana
Several
years have passed since your last work, Run Ragged; your show at Keep It
True Festival make us all ask what are your plans for the future. How are
things going for you?
Well, I have had personal things to sort out over the last few months which
has pretty much kept me from working on new material. As you mentioned we
played the 'Keep It True' festival in Germany late last year, but that was
about it. This year looks as though it's going to be busier, we're playing
two shows in Holland in March, one of which is the 'Raise Your Fist' festival
and we've got possible shows in Germany, England and Japan that may or may
not happen. We're also talking to a record company about putting out an
album as well.
We just said you took part to the Keep It True Festival; what did
it mean for you to represent old heavy metal school?
We always represent old school metal because that's what we are. It's always
great to keep the old school flag flying, especially at festivals, as it
lets people know that we're still alive and kicking, and not going quietly
into middle age, ha ha!!
How do you judge today Run Ragged? I think it is a sort of mix
between the aggressivity of Power Games and the “melody” of Wake Me. What
do you think?
I played it again the other day and I'd forgotten how 'in your face' it
is! We wanted it to be aggressive as that was the way we were feeling at
the time, and I think it worked. Looking back 'Wake Me' was too melodic,
any new stuff will be ' well hard!!!
When
you decided to realize This Time, were there some particular motivations
which drove you to change your style?
As I've said many times the change of style gradually crept up on us, we
were young, only teenagers, we thought we were simply writing better songs
and never gave a thought to what our fans might think of the change. Obviously
we made a mistake, I can see that now, having said that I'm still proud
of 'This Time', I think there are some good songs on it.
After so many yers, don’t you think that all that years lived in
silence could have been caused by several missing chances?
Yes, I guess so. Apart from the fact that we shouldn't have changed our
style we made some bad decisions back then, regarding management and record
companies, that's the way it goes though.....
What could you tell me about the recording of Run Ragged? Was it
your chice to make a sort of “face impact” recording, with the effects of
a live album?
Yeah, we wanted it be as 'in your face' as possible, a lot of it was pretty
much live anyway, which may have something to do with not having much money
to record with, ha ha!! It had to be as raw as possible, just like us, ha
ha!
And what can you say about the… not good looking artwork of Run
Ragged?
Don't you like it? I thought it was OK.
What does the lyrics of Eighties talks about?
We wrote 'Eighties' as a tribute to that period of time, which of course
is where we come from, and are probably still living! It's about someone
who wishes they were back there, if only in their head.
How did you know the vocalist Jamie Manton, who I think isn one
of the best screamers on this earth?
We stole Jamie from another band! Nathan had seen him singing with this
other band and thought he would be great for us, eventually we managed to
track him down and luckily he decided to join us. He's got a massively loud
voice, he doesn't really need to use a microphone, ha ha!!
Why Jeff Cox plays no more in the band?
Jeff left the band because he was having problems at home with his wife.
He didn't really want to leave but he's got two young children so we respected
his decision and wished him all the best.
However, Darren Furze is a very good substitute…
Oh yeah, Darren is very very good, a perfect bass player for us, great on
stage as well. Him and Jamie are always disappearing down into the audience!!
What things do tou remember with pleasure about nwobhm? Do yoy
think is right to consider Jaguar close to it?
I remember the friendliness of the whole scene, we got to know a lot of
bands well, Raven, Venom, Girlschool. I also liked the fact that bands were
doing things for themselves, putting out their own records and stuff, without
having to go grovelling to record companies, unfortunately none of that
exists anymore, not in England anyway.
Did you plan a long tour to promote your next album or are you
going to play only at festivals?
Well, we've actually got to make the album first, and I'm not sure when
that's going to happen at the moment. We're happy to do whatever is offered
to us, we'll do festivals or proper tours, as long as it's right for the
band. Gone are the days when I've done stuff I didn't really want to do,
we do it on our own terms now.
What do we have to expect from your new album?
I can't tell you that at the moment, because I don't really know, ha ha!
It'll be as good as we can possibly make it though.
Now it seems that everyone like to enlarge their discography realizing
dvds (like Iron Maiden seem to do every 6 months…), why don’t you make one
too?
Hmm, it would be nice, but as usual it's a question of money, we haven't
got any!! I will have to have a word with Angel Air, I've got plenty of
live stuff that we filmed over the last few years.
