Interview a Katon W. de Pena - Hirax - italian version
1 - Hi Katon, "Barrage of Noise" is an incredible mixing of powerful
thrash with real fuckin’ speed metal. Which’s your secret?
KATON: HELLO! Well, I thank you for your nice compliment! It’s not really
a secret… I just have complete dedication to raw, uncompromised METAL!!
I try to play the kind of THRASH music I know. I don’t like nu metal…I don’t
listen to rap metal…I like the REAL STUFF!! As well as hardcore punk, and
crossover crustcore power violence. I’ve never been into trendy metal music.
That shit just comes and goes. I’ve been playing underground music my whole
life. I will continue to play from the heart! No matter how known HIRAX
gets, or how many records we sell… we will ALWAYS play FAST, HARD and LOUD!!!
"Barrage Of Noise" is just a little bit of what we have coming musically.
The next record will kill everything we’ve ever done.
2 - You are working on the upcoming European Tour. Hirax should be in
Italy in summer?
KATON: If everything goes well… YES! We’ve had a lot of interest from
the European countries! It looks like Italy will be part of the tour. Our
booking agent has already confirmed Germany, Belgium, Holland, U.K., Spain,
France, and Italy!! We have also been confirmed to play June 28th at the
"Bang Your Head" festival in Balingen, GERMANY along with TWISTED SISTER,
DIO, THIN LIZZY, HAMMERFALL, U.D.O., SODOM, OVERKILL, HYPOCRISY, Y & T,
DOKKEN, TNT, ANNIHILATOR, MASTERPLAN, AMON AMARTH, BRAINSTORM, AXXIS, PINK
CREAM 69, ROB ROCK, BITCH, ANGEL WITCH, DESTRUCTOR. There are more tour
dates being planned… we will be touring a lot! After Europe … we will hit
South America.
3 - What do you think about the underground movement?
KATON: It is stronger than ever. We are doing very well touring and
recording a lot! We are going to a lot of countries for the first time this
year 2003. There have been people writing to us for years… and now we are
going out on the road and they will finally get to see us play live concerts!
For us, the underground is alive and well! I think that our fans know -
that we have a special thing… we have our own following… wherever we go…
people show up! We are very honored! The letters come to us from countries
all over the world – Russia, Poland, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, South
Africa, Mexico, the Philippines, Peru, Greece, Brazil, Spain, Japan, etc.
All over the place!! It seems that more and more people find out about us
everyday!
4 - Which 3 CDs would you take with you to a lonely island?
KATON: That’s a fuckin hard question!! Especially because I really LOVE
music! …1. Ramones, "Leave Home" 2. Thin Lizzy, "Jailbreak" 3. I can’t even
answer this question… but um… 3. the French heavy metal punk band, Trust,
the first three albums. It doesn’t matter because I love their early stuff.
"Repression," …but I could use some Motorhead, Discharge, Venom, Tank, Girlschool,
Judas Priest, Bad Brains, Black Flag, the very first Iron Maiden album…
That’s a really hard question. I’d be damned if I was on an island because
I love so much music. I’d die without it! Another great band was Neos…hardcore
band from Canada. Faster than lightening!
5 - If you`ve the chance to change one day of your life. Which will it
be and why?
KATON: I wouldn’t change anything. I believe in what I’ve done my whole
life…especially now I know I’m lucky. I have the greatest fans in the world
and they are very supportive of my band, HIRAX. I’m on top of the universe!
Not even war can bring me down!! I love mankind because mankind has been
good to me. I think the world needs hardcore music … to me, playing music
is not a job… it’s a gift from the gods above. Live and let live. Play your
music loud!
6 - Which song shall be played on your burial?
KATON: Death is not a sad thing… it’s actually where you are born again.
So as I step over into a new life… "Black Rose" by Thin Lizzy. It’s a very
hard record to find… but it’s worth it … just for that song alone.
7 - If you had the chance to kill someone and to bring back one person
in the same way, which would it be and why?
KATON: Any person which preys upon the weak should be struck down in
vengeance!! If I wasn’t a musician I would probably be a guardian. Protect
the poor and the weak. We are all created equal. Nobody has the right to
take another person’s life. I don’t like vultures. I do believe in an eye
for an eye, though.
8 - What is your opinion on political lyrics?
KATON: I think it’s important to speak out against injustice. It is
important for all of us as human beings to communicate. We must respect
each other’s opinions and honor each other’s rights. It’s o.k. to disagree
and have different religions and learn about each other. The more we understand…
the better we can all live in harmony. Isn’t music about bringing people
together?
9 - What can we expect from your band in the future?
KATON: A lot of great things! A new record coming up soon and more touring.
